Good idea to rent first. You should rent in an apartment complex that allows you to break your lease if you buy a house. If you take the risk with renting from an owner you must verify every month if the property is in pre foreclose. Even if the owner is current on his mortgage he may decide to do a short sale and then you gave to allow realtors and their buyers to traipse through!

Best to keep it simple and lower risk of foreclosure and rent in a complex..until you're ready to buy.

New homes in the Tampa area are now at great prices. My advice? Do not rent. Prices are going up and you will miss out.

As a single dad and Realtor/Owner of La Rosa Realty Tampa I understand your concerns and can empathize with your situation. I would recommend renting first to get a feel for the market and remember everything is negotiable (all terms), so please let us know if we can help with that aspect. I am a certified negotiation expert Realtor and can help you with that. The South Tampa Area is the best in terms of Hillsborough Schools but more expensive, much of your decision depends on your budget. Also, generally speaking Pinellas County school system is traditionally better. I also blog about these topics:

There are good schools all over Hillsborough County. I recommend looking into renting in the Suburb community of Brandon. It’s faster to get to various locations in Tampa from Brandon via the Selmon Expressway than it is from some locations inside the city. Here are some links to help you with information on the school grades for 2012.

Hi Maria,
There are great schools in zipcode 33626 (west side of Tampa, Westchase Countryway). The aparment rental rates are much lower in such zipcode, than many other areas in South Tampa.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.
Thanks,

South Tampa, West Chase, Carrollwood, Palm Harbor are all pretty nice areas with great school zones. Rent prices will vary also.

All the best,

The public schools in South Tampa are great! Roosevelt Elementary and Gorie Elementary are very good schools. There are a lot of good private schools in the area too. South Tampa is close to downtown Tampa, beautiful Bayshore Boulevard, Childrens Musems, The Florida Aquarium, Great Resturants, shops, shoping and the Airport. It is about 35/40 minutes to the beach. For rentals you may want to check on Craigs list for condos or homes for rent. I would also be glad to set up a seach for you on my website DiscoverFloridaRealEstate.com. Feel free to call me i have lived in South Tampa for 18 years and am familure with your school options. Hope this helps. You can reach me at 813-417-4805 if you have any questions about the area.

The Best school district in the Tampa Bay area is in South Tampa. Gorrie Elementary, Wilson Middle School, and Plant high are all consistently ranked in the best public schools in Florida. Renting in South Tampa is quite difficult between June-August. The housing index in this area is increasing rapidly and the market is appreciating quicker than ever. Prices have already bottomed out, but are still well below what they should be. Check out my website at http://www.sellingtb.com anytime for rentals or listings. The site is linked to MLS and provides up-to-date properties on the market. You can also contact me at 813 421 9988.
