I am a firm believer in visiting a neighborhood and trying to learn about it first hand. The neighborhood you are interested in is dominated by high density housing. You will probably find noticeable differences between each complex. Spend some time talking with people in the complex where you are thinking of moving to.

With the San Antonio Center going through major rebuilding and Mountain View being a hot spot for Google employees the area is sure to attract more competition for the available housing. More competition generally forces out any people resorting to crime.

If you look at the various web sites reporting crime statistics keep in mind higher density of people leads to a higher density of crimes which doesn't necessarily mean more crime per person.

Amelia,
As Terri said you should check with the police or with an online crime report site for crime statistics.

I can tell you that Mountain View is going through a boom right now and I find it hard to believe that a street like Latham will be untouched by the hoards of young professionals trying to find places to live. When a new 2 bedroom apartment down town costs $4600 a month to rent it can not help by influence the price of housing in other parts of Mountain View, especially so close to down town like Latham.

I think that very soon the apartments and condos on Latham will be so expensive that only the wealthy will be able to afford them.

We agents cannot speak to crime. There is a website http://www.CrimeReports.com you can check on.

I suggest buyers knock on neighbors doors to ask their opinion, visit the local retail stores and ask the employees, and visit the neighborhood at all hours of the day, night, weekends, and plan to test drive your own commute both ways
