Underwriting fees are associated with the mortgage. More than likely you became aware of your magic $ amount on the lender's Good Faith Estimate.
You are being charged for the process of underwriting your mortgage. Someone had to go through and verify ALL of the information your provided in your mortgage app regarding income, rent, DITI, etc. It's one of the costs associated with getting the money.
