What is the lowest score for a USDA home loan?

Asked by Manorguy, Travis County, TX Mon Jul 18, 2011

I am interested in buying a house at the end of this year before my lease goes up on my apartment. I would like to get in contact with local lenders to be able to get a USDA loan.

Just a small clarification, I have done USDA RDL without a score in the same manner as an FHA with non-traditional credit. It can be done, so to answer your question correctly there is no minimum credit score for a manual underwriting decision, it is at the discretion of the UTR. With a GUS approval (Guaranteed Underwriting System) I am still seem to be able to go as low as 620.

Best of Luck!

Most lenders that fund the USDA Guaranteed program require a 620 credit score or higher in addition to other requirements. It is a great program if you meet the requirements and you find a home in a rural development area as the program is intended for. To verify if a home is in a USDA eligible area you can go to the following link and just plug in a full address:…

The site will show you on an interactive map whether the property is in an eligible area or not. If you are buying in Manor I can tell you most of that area is in a USDA eligible area. For more details on the program you go to the following link:…

I have originated and closed many USDA loans in Texas so if you would like up to date lender details on how to get pre-approved for this type of mortgage please feel free to contact me at your convenience.

Thank you.

USDA is not as hung up on credit score as some other loans. Your whole application is evaluated by real people, and circumstances behind credit scores and credit capacity are taken into account, too. It's a government loan program that was developed to spur on growth in rural areas. Some of those rural areas aren't so rural anymore.
