This is a terrific question. The answer is it depends. If you had a job in the same field with no major gap of employement (3 months or more), you don't need to wait at all. If there was a major gap of employment, you'll need to write an explanation letter, but again, you'll be fine. If you switched fields, you may have to wait a until the probabtion period is over, but if you have good credit, you might be able to get an exception.
The undewriter will look for a 2 yr job history. it doesn't have to be the same job, just as long as you had a job. (and being a full-time student counts can be used as part of the 2 yr job history.)
