As a kitchen designer at a big box store, I've ran the numbers for customers before. Every single time the cabinet refacing is cheaper, but in most cases the overall difference has been between $300-$1200 dollars.

The best option would be to go into a store. The universal kitchen is a 10x10 = 20LF and that can give you an idea of what cost would be on the doorstyle you personally like.

Important Questions/Things to Look for:
Solid Raised Door vs. Veneer Rasied
Cabinet Box construction(MDF) vs. APC(All Plywood Construction)
Dovetail Drawers vs. Stapled boxes

An easy 'fix' for outdated kitchen cabinets is to replace just the hardware. Depending on how fancy you want to get, handles range anywhere from $1.00 up per handle. Oftentimes you don't even have to replace the hinges.

I just did this for my mother's house. It can be done in a few hours and really changed the look of the whole room!
