Yes - we've found that in Texas, where new homes abound, updating the hardware in a home can help it compete against new homes and sell for more. The 'builder brass' basic option isn't even used much by the builders anymore. Don't go to the mall to do a project like this. The price can be astronomical. Find a hardware store. Doorknobs, faucets, and light fixtures are pretty simple projects - but do it with a friend, as an extra set of hands never hurts. Stick with one color/style theme throughout the home.

I was just showing a buyer in Missouri City and we noticed how dated shiny brass looked vs new builder product. If you do this change, be consistent and do everything: knobs, hinges, thresholds all need to match. This can get expensive, so consult your Realtor to see if the change will get you a payback.

I agree with Linda that the updated look is best. Shiny brass is out. Rather than buy new, have you considered painting them? There are plenty of web sites that can give instructions. That should be a quick and inexpensive fix.

Whatever you can do to make your house feel updated and move in ready will help it sell. It is usually most desirable to have all of the "finishes" the same throughout the house. Currently the chrome/ brushed chrome finish (less expensive than nickel) is in vogue. Depending on the cost (number of fixtures to replace) it may be worth the expense.
