When I first moved here from a bigger town I said the same thing. If you blink when you drive throught it you will miss it. It's a great town, NJ Transit is right there, there is the Dunellen movie theater right in town everything is in walking distance and they just starting haveing police walking beats again. It is so safe that I have had my door unlocked while I was away and not a thing has ever happened. I would not make a habbit of it but it is unbelievably safe.
Hi Diane - Several of my friends in Dunellen joke that it's only one square mile, but no one ever leaves. Part of what is nice is that it still retains a small-town feel, with a main street and town square. Those I know who live there generally like living there and feel secure. (One of them is very safety conscious and wouldn't live anywhere she couldn't feel comfortable walking out at night.)
Dunellen is a very nice town with NYC Train Station which charges resident only $40 a month on parking and non resident $50 a month; however, weekend and holidays, parking is free. Right next to it is a nice Dunellen Library, and the other side is police station and court which make the area very safe.
Every morning, I drove to Dunellen train station and park my car there and took NJ Transit to Newark Penn Station to take PATH to NYC, and back in the evening. For all these years, I never had any problem. I am a bit too much on community care, and I picked up any trash in the train while I was waiting for the train; I got a picker to even pick up all the cigarettes, so the state area has been very clean.
The station also has a waiting room with stand of novels that passengers, mostly IT professionals working at Wall St, can borrow and read. Many passengers from Warren, Green Brook, Piscataway other than Dunellen.
I particular like the gas station right at train station that not only has great price but also provide easy drop off for auto care before my heading NYC and coming back to pick up.
There is a nice Medemerge no need on appoinment, can drop in 8am to 10pm off Rt 529, the Washington Ave that we used for over dozen years, very convenient and handy.
Futher north to Rt 22, you see lots of auto dealers, very easy to buy a car, and there is huge brand new Comerce Bank grand opening when we saw thousands of neighbors that day, and right next to it is a brand new CVS. Along Rt 22, there is a huge Asian Food Center, meaning, many Asian families living in the area, that often implies the area very safe with good school district.
Next to Dunellen Train Station also has NJ Transit bus to NYC at Port Authority near Time Square; there are also other bus thru Middlesex Mall to Edison and New Brunswick.

Happy Hunting!
Diane,
Nice small town. Northside of town has the bigger more expensive homes thought they are very affordable compared to other nearby towns. Easy commute to the city with NY trains and crime rates similar to Middlesex, Greenbrook and Piscataway. I grew up in Piscataway and know Dunellen well. If you have any questions, please contact me through my website. Good luck!
I've done some business financing people in the town and found it to be very nice. The link below will reveal all the demographoic information you seek.
