Jenny,
usually city police departments have additional information and resources the state Megan's Law website does not have. The City of San Francisco has an interactive map feature called CrimeMAPS:
http://www.sfgov.org/site/police_index.asp
You can search areas of the city for individuals with various offenses.

www.peoplefinders.com also has a free service but you have to register. The familywatchdog.us site recommended earlier has a nice feature of showing both home and work.

That's a good site. Do remember that this is only the site for registered sex offenders; some may or may not have moved in or our of the area.

For other safety concerns, you can check with the local police stations.
