When it comes to any safety concerns, your best source of accurate and up to the minute information is the local police department; why not call/visit and ask all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand; if unfamiliar with the area, do re-visit more than once and familiarize yourself with the neighborhood...

Are you refering to the Riverton? If so, it is surrounded by Lenox Terrace, Beacon Mews, Beacon Towers, Savoy West and many other upscale housing units. At 134th street just off 5th Ave. you will find the Hansborough Community Center where I swim 3 times a week, Inexpensive and short walk from your rental. Enjoy a soulful meal in Spoonbread Restaurant and for an inexpresive breakfast check out Jimbos. Breafast, lunch and dinner at Mannas buffet restaurant gives you an opportunity to taste many different traditional soul food dishes. Not feeling well, Harlem Hospital is at the corner of 135 & Lenox Ave.

The area is wonderful, as with all of the big city, there is always the potential of crime, but you can ask your local police department, I believe that is the 29th precinct but I may be wrong.

Hello Roxy, FYI there is no 29th Precinct. The location you inquired about is protected by the 25th Precinct (212-860-6511), here are the latest crime statistics from which you can base your own opinions;…

Hi Roxy. Just my two cents here. As others have indicated the police would be the best way to check on crime stats but there is always more to a neighborhood than just statistics. Broker websites may also have links to crime stats as well.

Your handle indicated that you may be living in Harlem, yes? You can always go into the neighborhood at various time of the day to check local activity, restaurants, parks, etc. This will give you a "feel" for the area and give you a fix on the closest subway for your work commute. Good luck.

Riverton is a replica of Stuyvesant Town the apartments are exactly the same. It is entirely gated with guards 24/7.
Fifth Avenue has some great shops in the upper 120's, and of course you have all the shops on 125th. Madison Avenue has some wonderful 19th Century architecture, Astor Row at 130th is entirely preserved with Landmark status, and you have a nice park from 130th-132nd Sts.
If you are taking the trains you have the 2/3 at 135th next to Harlem Hospital, or you can walk over the Madison Ave Bridge to catch the 4/5 trains.
Actually the most important safety concern for you is to be careful of the traffic - that is a very treacherous intersection at 135th and Madison.
