If you are wanting to protect your investment, I would consider purchasing a Condo or Townhome. It is generally much easier and quicker to sell a condo or townhome.

As for areas, I honestly recommend looking at Condos or Townhomes around West End, Hillsboro Village, Green Hills, and Sylvan Park. The prices should be very similar to what you are looking at, but your resale values will likely be higher, and as a plus, it is closer to downtown.

For example, consider this information on Sylvan Park, with links to Sylvan Park townhomes and condos for sale:

Real Estate Agents are not allowed to comment on a variety of topics. The Fair Housing Act restricts the information that can be provided by a Real Estate Agent. Visiting the area and making your own determinations about what is best for you is the way to go.

Off Limit Topics Include:
• Crime Statistic (including questions about whether a neighborhood is good or bad or safe)
• Demographics
• Environmental Concerns
• Household Income
• Religion
• Schools (including questions about how good or bad the school is)

Determining to the answers to questions on any of the topics listed above is something that you would need to do on your own. It is up to the individual to make their own determination about a specific area. If a Real Estate Agent were to comment on such a thing, it could be steering which is a prohibited act.

First, you will need to check out the crime statistics on line. You can search by city or zip codes to get the info you need.

As far as townhome or single family, that is a personal choice. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Only you can decide what would work best for you. How much time you like to spend on maintenance, yard work, etc will be a factor to consider.

I cannot give you an opinion as to the best area. Again, that is something you will need to research for yourself. No place is entirely bad or good. You will need to research to find what works for you.
Do you need to be near schools, work, transportation, amenities such as shopping and dining? All those factors play a part in the neighborhood that will become home to you.

I hope this is helpful. Sorry I could not be more specific.
