Most homes are broken into when people are at work around 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM try to use good pick proof dead bolt locks and keep your windows closed and locked. At night time it is unusual but keep your doors + windows locked when your home or sleeping. If you need to open a door for someone always look through the peephole make sure you know who is at your door and it is good to have a security chain on your door with 3" screws that you screw into the frame of the door. Greenpoint is a pretty safe place to live but remember there will always be some crime.

I feel safe in here but the transportation situation is horrible. I can't get on the L train in the morning or at night during the rush hours. G train is not better. I am moving out because I no longer can commute to Manhattan. And prices are too high.
As long as criminals have transportation, a closely knit community is the best security. Stay involved, stay engaged, stay vigilent, stay visible, stay safe.
You always have to be concerned about crime statistics in the big city. Most parts of Brooklyn are relatively safe including Greenpoint. You should visit the local police precinct, talk with local business owners and spend some time in the area and see if you feel safe.
No matter where you live there is always a chance that crime can happen, just do your research and you should be fine.
