When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Realtors can't recommend specific neighborhoods due to anti-steering laws. Therefore, I would recommend checking If you're not familiar with the area, drive the neighborhood during the day and at night.

When I bought my house I knocked on neighbor's doors asking them how long they have lived there and if they have any issues with the neighborhood. Neighbors will usually be very candid. You can always take a Google virtual tour using Street View and "drive" down the streets from the comforts of your own home too :)
