Ruth, the Springfield Police Department has a website that shows crime mapped out by incident. You can see how many thefts, burglaries, rapes, etc happened in what part of the city. http://maps.springfieldmo.gov/website/crimeseen_081/viewer.htm

If that doesn't work, just go to http://www.springfieldmo.gov and look for the Police Dept - they have it listed as the CrimeSeen map. People will generally tell you that the South side is safer than the north, although reports vary. I live in the SE area of Springfield and feel it is very safe.
