Dear Melody,
Noe Valley is a wonderful area in which to live. 24th Street is alive with shops and restaurants. You must decide on the safety issue on your own. No one can really tell you. You can go to the police website and check out crime statistics for all of S.F. (A link is available on my website as well as to SF Station which can tell you about the commercial aspect.) I agree with Megan and Samppa's descriptions.
Also, Noe Valley is a great place to live if you are commuting to the Peninsula or South Bay. It can be a bit quiet and will definitely give you some good exercise depending on which street you live, it is a "valley" after all! :-) Check out the map for biking and walking. Hello,
I've lived in Noe Valley for 2 years now and it's probably as safe as it gets in a city like San Francisco. To over-generalize, if you have a golden retriever, station wagon and a Significant Other with a couple of kids, you will perfectly blend in. Yes, it is a nice family neighborhood that someone could call boring - particularly if you comparison point is Mission or Castro. Church and 24th street are full of restaurants, cafes and other little neighborhood services from video rental stores to day spas. Parking can be a hassle, unless you live near a playground, of which there are plenty... Mon Jun 25 2007, 00:19

I've driven through this area a few times during the day and at night, but have not lived here myself. My "just passing through" impression is that it is a very safe and quite area. As a woman, I would feel safe walking around alone. The houses seemed to be a little on the older side, but in good condition. And, If i recall correctly, there are also some nice green parks in the area.
Below is a link to a blog that has some postings about the area. Might be worth a read Sat Jun 23 2007, 22:12 Web Reference: http://sf.curbed.com/archives/categories/noe_valley.php
