Your best bet is to visit http://www.bjs.gov/ which provides specific crime date by region. You can also visit http://www.JerryGearhart.com select community from the main menu. You will be able to view specific demographics provided by several sources.

As far as the type of neighborhood and it's demeanor I typically suggest my clients go into the neighborhood at different times of the day throughout a week or so. Since you are out of town I'd do this for you and record the neighborhood so that you could see for yourself OR request some neighbors to tell you about the neighborhood.
