I live less than 1/2 mile from Lakewind Estates and it's a beautiful safe place to live. Lake Travis is easily accessible and the school district, Lake Travis ISD, is one of the best in the State. Originally from New England and it's cold winters I think the weather here is fantastic!!!
I lived in Hudson Bend for a bit and it is a great area. Lake Wind Estates is nice since you can access it right off of the 620 which is a main thoroughfare that cuts through the hill country. My wife used to jog and road ride (bike) all over the bend and never worried about it. She felt quite safe. I wish you the best of luck in your search.
I have lived and/or owned property in the Lake Travis area for almost 20 years because I absolutely love it. It is very safe and the skies are almost always clear and sunny. Yesterday it was in the 70's and today the 20's-that is January for you. Spring is gorgeous and filled with wildflowers. You can expect high temps in the Summer but we have a very big shared swimming pool called Lake Travis with Lake Austin on the other side of RR620. In addition, there are numerous Hill Country swimming holes for you to discover and enjoy.

I have called Austin HOME for more than 25 years. I have called the Lake Travis Area home for the last 12 years. Living and raising a family in 78734, few miles north of Lakeway is a joy for both my wife and me. Exemplary schools, great people, and great lakes. Only 22 toi 24 miles from downtown Austin, which translates to nearly 45 minutes drive.
We love it. It was the best decision we have ever made in 1997.
I think is a great area. In fact I am moving back to the Lake Travis area when I find the right property. I prefer Hudsen Bend area as Lakeway can be a little restrictive. You can check out the HOA at their website: http://www.lakewindestateshoa.com/. They even have information posted there on two of the homes that are currently for sale: 4305 Rum Runner and 4028 Lago Viento. If you would like to see these homes or any others in 78734 please give me a call
I would be happy to help.
The other realtors gave very good information about the neighborhood, crime rate resources, and overall helpful information on the 78734/Lakeway areas.
I am also very familiar with Lakewind Estates as I have in that subdivision listed on Lago Viento. For that reason, I can help you with any of the detailed quesitons or particulars for that neighborhood or the specific homes for sale. Most all of the homes were built by the same builder during a similar timeframe. Some have lake views and some have pools with lake views. The lots are large and there is a community park that residents can access. All of Lakewind Estates is gated which helps with traffic and the overall feeling of security.
Let me know what else you might need. You should be able to click on my name to see my listings. Or you can find it on Lago Viento Drive.
Call or email anytime.

I have been going to Lake Travis for over thirty years and I have personally always felt safe. However in order for you to be sure its the right place for you and your family you should check out the crime stats. I can confirm the Lakeway police are very dillegant about catching speeders, so I would imagine you will find the stats reflect their efforts. Here is their website. Feel free to call them directly to obtain the answers you need about the areas crime. http://www.cityoflakeway.com/index.aspx?NID=72
You may also wish to examine the schools and choose where you want your daughter to attend. This may determine which neighborhod you ultimately choose. The LTISD high school always seems to be in the top tier of schools, but you can see for yourself at these sites: http://www.SchoolMatters.com, and http://www.GreatSchools.org. These sites are a great resource for parents to compare: student to teacher ratios, class size, what parents are saying about certian schools, advanced placement options, and learning disability programs, etc.
If you need more help please let me know. Lake Travis is a great place to live, play and sail!

Lakewind Estates is in a great area of Lakeway. New shopping venues all around, and an excellent school district...welcome to Texas. The weather has been a bit hotter than usual, but we are expecting that cooler temperatures are just around the corner. As Robert pointed out, you can google the crime rate data for this area... but I agree you should feel pretty good about the area you have choosen to live in.
Hope your move is uneventful.
here's what you'll come up with, when you enter that zip code at Weather.com: http://www.weather.com/outlook/health/fitness/wxclimatology/
You are probably in just the preliminary phases of searching for a house. This is a very biased opinion, (and I mean very biased opinion), but you really need to start interviewing Realtors to make this a smoother transition, and to answer questions you may have along the way, as Real Estate in Texas is very different. Another biased opinion, but I would be the first guy you call.
