Geographically Denver-Metro is less congested on the west side and in the foothill mountain areas. There is a tremendous amount of open space and great quality of life surrounding these western subdivisions and communities. In the under $300 range close to Denver, I like Berkeley. Check the walk score.
For a suburb that "is" Colorado, Ken Caryl is "it" with it's great schools and small town feel up against the mountains,

Where are you moving from?
One of your questions is about crime, the city of Denver has a great website where you can see on their map where crimes have occured and what types of crime they were. As far as which areas are growing, I would guess that the Northeast area, near Denver International Airport would be the fastest growing area. If your questions is geared towards the suburbs of Denver, then probably South and Southeast of the city...Southeast Aurora, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Centennial.
What areas of the city are the nicest, that's such a personal thing. Tell us what you think of when you're thinking of nice. If you're talking within Denver city limits, do you like being right downtown, do you want to be near bike trails, do you want to be near great parks, do you want to be near great restaurants, art districts, shopping? Tell us Realtors what you like and let's see if we come up with neighborhoods for you to zero in on.
One things for sure, you will love living in Denver. Most people I have worked with that are leaving the area are very sad to go, it's usually for job transfers.
