Great question. The best answer I can give is to encourage you to view Marion County Crime statistics.

Here's the link: http://imaps.indygov.org/publicsafetymaps/

"Risky" is a word that may have different meanings for different people. I recommend looking at the data and making your own judgment about what's safe, what's risky, and what's just plain dangerous.

Good luck!

Cathy,
I live in Fountain Square. To be even more vague, the answer is yes, and no. Fountain square has some real gems within a couple of blocks of Virginia, Shelby and Prospect, but the area is hit and miss from one block to the next. On my street (Woodlawn), go to blocks east of me and the neighbors can be a little sketchy. Where I am, the neighbors are for the most part pretty good. Look for recent renovations; it seems like there are recent houses getting a makeover.
Also, commuting to anywhere in town from here is much quicker than you'd expect. With access to 65/70n within a minute or two, I make the north side in 20 mins easy.
Hope this helps!

Cathy,

I think both Joe and Marcy provided good feedback for you. I would ask you, in addition to viewing crime statistics, what areas are you used to? Is safety number one priority to you? What type of environment are you wanting to be in (busy city, quiet city, suburb)? From my experience, I have heard both positive and negative feedback for the area. It seems to be a place with lots to do (nightlife, restaurants) but it's also an area that has been "up and coming" for more than 10 years. Use your judgment, look at the stats, and I recommend going near the duplex both during the day and at night, through the week, and on weekends to see how the area feels. Your best resource may also be local residents who can provide insight that can be very valuable.
