When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

There are a couple of things you can do to help you decide that. One would be to call the police department and ask them - find out what types of incidents have occurred there. Another is to go there at different times of the day/night to see what it's like - to see if you feel comfortable.

I hope that helps.

Hi Michael, why not use Trulia's amazing maps to discover whether or not this is a safe area or not. Check out :,CA/x_map/#for_sa…

The crime maps are available for every single place in the country, but interpreting the data is a bit tricky. Basically what you need to know is that the red areas can be pretty unsafe for that given COUNTY. I use all caps on county because you can't compare between counties on this map. This is a rather high crime area of san mateo county mostly due to its downtown rwc location near the county jail. Otherwise, it is pretty decent and improving all the time, as RWC is overall!

- Full disclosure: I work at Trulia and am responsible for the maps...I am not an agent but I do live in redwood city.

This is a tough question for Realtors – while we’d love to be able to give you our opinion, we can’t. Overall, Realtors are prohibited by law from telling you whether or not any specific neighborhood is safe. It’s called “steering” and we are prohibited by our code of ethics and federal law from providing such information. Here are a couple posts that explain more:

NO STEERING ALLOWED: 3 Important Facts To Know As A Buyer…

Don’t Get ‘Steered’ in the Wrong Direction…

However, we CAN tell you where to go to get information. In your case, for crime statistics, go to the following sites:

Not knowing if a neighborhood is safe or not can be a concerning thing for a new home buyer. The best advise will come from those that already live in the surrounding area and neighborhood. If you don't know of anyone already living there, going by at various days/times is a good way to get a feel for it. Keep in mind that even the "safest" neighborhoods will have their occasional mishaps and problems.

I have sold a number of properties in this neighborhood and can put you in touch with current residences, they can tell you first hand what they think of the neighborhood. We currently have a listing in this neighborhood, you are more than welcome to come to the open house this Sunday and get a sense for the area.
