Is the neighborhood surrounding Alcatraz and California (in Berkeley) safe? May have to walk home at night.?

Asked by Martha Hernandez, Berkeley, CA Sat Jul 28, 2012

I am a second year female college student attending UC Berkeley. Sometimes I have to walk home at night, this neighborhood seems affordable, however since I am new to the area I am not sure how safe it is. Especially if walking alone.

I lived in Berkeley, but not exactly in that area. But I drive through Alcatraz often. I wouldn't consider it safe for a female college student. If you were my sister or daughter, I would tell you not to walk by yourself at night. I don't have any crime stats, but it feels dark and with not many people in that area.

Hello,
It is a matter of opinion but you can check the crime stats and decide for yourself. I am not a realtor, rather a resident of Berkeley and I consider it safe but you need to decide for yourself.
Check out the neighborhood at ALL times of day and see if you feel comfortable.

I live right near there. Quite safe, don't worry.

Great suggestions below.

Overall, Realtors are prohibited by law from telling you whether or not any specific neighborhood is safe. It’s called “steering” and we are prohibited by our code of ethics and federal law from providing such information. Here are a couple posts that explain more:

However, we CAN tell you where to go to get information. In your case, for Richmond crime statistics, go to the following site:

3 things you can do: got to crimereports.com and check for what crimes might be occurring. 2) get the names of the beat cops in the area and talk to them, and 3) walk around on a Saturday AM, and talk to neighbors who've been there a while.. Good luck.

Good suggestions from the others. i would just add that you should consider talking to the neighbors. Go on the weekend, or just after work, or whenever you can. Neighbors know who plays drums at midnight and whose house got broken into. I encourage all my buyers to do that. Just one more bit of knowledge about your new home and huge financial investment.

Hi, You can visit http://www.HomeFair.com and click on the city reports section for in-depth cime stats and area demographics. Other options are http://www.spotcrime.com and callingthe local police dept.

As a realtor I am strictly forbidden to cast judgements about what is considered "safe" or "unsafe" since it can be somewhat subjective, but I would encourage you to check out websites the give you crime stats like:

http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/berkeley/crime/
http://police.berkeley.edu/crimemap/

You can also call the Berkeley police department directly via phone and ask about crime in specific neighborhoods.

Good luck in your search and let me know if you have any other questions!
