Is the corner of Foster and Damen Safe? It shows up in orange right in the middle of a whole bunch of Green. Any Particular reason?

There is an uneven piece of concrete on the west side of Damen, in front of Amundsen. I tripped on it walking my dog the other day. Could be dangerous so be careful if you walk over there.

I lived just north of Damen & Foster. Better to move south of there if you can--the kids leave a mess after school and are really difficult to get through if you have to walk that way every morning. There are also always the requisite trouble makers hanging out on the corner (who didn't look like students to me). I wouldn't move that far north on Damen again.

Hi Christopher,

Hopefully you got your answer.

I've been around this neighborhood, I have friends that live by there, at all times of day night and thus far (knock on wood) no issues.

That said, and as previously mentioned it is best if you "cruise" the neighborhood on your own time during different times of the day and week, especially now that it's getting warmer.

Good luck!

I was wondering the same thing when I was looking for my condo. I figured out it is because of Amundson High School. Like any high school (city or not), there is consistent crime. I've lived here since last September and have had absolutely no problems. Neighbors are respectful and relatively quiet. I walk around at night alone all the time and don't worry at all. It really is a great neighborhood!

Hi, Christopher:

This question occurs frequently on many blogs and real-estate related sites. Manuel is correct that real estate brokers cannot under the law characterize a neighborhood as "safe" or "unsafe." That's just not our expertise. A good resource for crime trends and statistics is the Chicago Police Clearmap System, a public portal:

http://gis.chicagopolice.org/clearmap/startpage.htm

The portal allows you to search for a variety of crimes using a number of filters such as type of incident or time of day. It also allows you to restrict the search area to a radius around a particular address.

Remember, Christopher, every neighborhood has crime. Using the police portal, you might be surprised at the results you encounter in areas of the city that many people would call "good."

When looking at sites such as the one I mentioned above, keep in mind the density of population and any other factors that might concentrate people and therefore incidents in a particular area (public places of amusement, shopping malls, railway stations, etc.).

In addition, one person's tolerance level for crime may be different than another's, so it doesn't make much sense for someone else to make that determination for you. In the end, this is a question you'll need to answer for yourself with a bit of research and personal investigation of the area in which you're considering a home.

Good luck in your search!

We cant comment on crime or safety. I suggest you do your own homework online. Also, check out the area for yourself. Best of luck.

Dear Christopher,

As brokers we are not allowed by law to answer those questions since safety can be considered relative. My recommendation would be to go to the area during different times of the day and decide for yourself. Also see websites such as http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/il/chicago/crime/

I personally wash my car just 4 blocks north at the car wash.
