Is the 3000 block of Irving S a safe neighborhood?

Asked by Kelly, MPLS Sun Feb 24, 2008

I am thinking of moving my family to this neighborhood. Is it safe? Or is it too close to uptown for comfort? How is the area overall?

I don't think I can imagine a safer neighborhood in any American city than the one to which you are considering moving. The area between Hennepin Ave and Lake of the Isles, north of Lake Street, is among the wealthiest neighborhoods in Minnesota, and the neighborhoods bordering it are solidly upper middle class. It sounds as though you will be just south of Lake.

Lake is a very busy street, and the area has a number of popular nightspots. Your issues will be lack of street parking, and the occasionally obnoxious drunken twentysomethings late at night on the weekend.

The fact that you ask the question, presumably after seeing the neighborhood, makes me inordinately curious: from where are you moving? If you are not used to urban life there will be some adjustments to make, of course. You cannot leave valuables visible in your car, or leave your bike unlocked in your front yard in any city, I wouldn't think.

We live about six blocks from Lake and Irving, and we love it. We raised our son here, and I really believe that the multitude of things to do in the city helped keep him out of trouble, along other benefits.

We have been in East Isles for a few years now and really enjoy it! Great spot to raise kids in the city!

Hi Kelly.......

Realtors, as hard to understand as it is, shy away from questions on safety, because of our laws, credibility, accuracy, etc.. Aaron did reference a good law enforvement and crime stat website, and I'd surely look that over, if I were you.

I hope that helps to clarify..........

Thanks, Todd Norsted

Kelly,
Spend some time in the neighborhood and see how it feels to you. Talk to the neighbors and the police and see how things are going. I think there's some good money to be made there in the next five years.

"Safe" is a word that everyone has a different definition for. In terms of crime, your best bet is to look at the Minneapolis Crime Statistics: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crime-statistics/

If there's a user here on Trulia that lives in the area, hopefully they will give a response as well.
