When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Everyone has their own notion of "safe." My suggestion would be that you speak with the local police precinct for their crime stats. In addition, spend a little time in the neighborhood at different times of day and see how you feel.

Do research into crime statistics on Google. Visit the local police precinct and ask them the same question. Visit local business owners and see what they say. Also, take a fiend or two and check out the lay of the land at 10PM-ish and see how you feel. After all of that... you have to go with your gut feeling. Good luck!
