When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local authorities with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Great answers below!

It's definitely worth while to check out crime reports and crime maps in your neighborhood, but I agree with Flavio that the only way to really make a decision about this is to go to the area yourself, spend some time there and see how you feel. If you don't feel safe walking in a specific area at night, it might be worth it to avoid doing so for your own peace of mind, even if the crime reports don't necessarily back up your feelings.

This is such a relative question. No place is absolutely safe. Learn about the neighborhood, and take common sense precautions.

http://www.crimereports.com is one resource. Crime is everywhere and happens in the best of neighborhoods. If anyone tells you it is safe ask them if they are also clairvoyant.
