Is crime an issue in Houston?
How safe is it or does it feel to walk around? And, is this the case across the city, or are there differences in different areas?

Stephan, have a local realtor send you links for crime reports in the specific area of Houston you are considering. I lived there for several years and like most cities the crime rate depends on the specific area you are actually in. If you have not spoken to a realtor in the area, send me an email and I'll pass your info along to a few friends in the area who give you valuable information for the area. While a realtor can not "steer" to towards one direction or specific part in town they can certainly give you the links to crime stats and neighborhood information.

Stephan: Yes crime is an issue in Houston as you would expect in the fourth largest city in the USA. Your Realtor can point you to the relevant crime reports for the area where you are interested in living.

Hi Stephan,
Houston and the surrounding areas are HUGE. Just like any other major city, there are areas where one may be concerned and areas where one may not feel concerned! You would have to visit sometime, drive around with someone who knows the area and see where you get your warm and fuzzies :) If you need any help with this, please feel free to call - Jennifer Ferris Keller Williams Realty, NE 713.309.5093 Tue Aug 14 2007, 17:23

Depends. If you listen to the overhyped news, you will probably draw the conclusion that Houston is a pretty dangerous city. I have lived here for over 8 years now and I find it to be a very safe city.

Houston, land wise, is one of the largest cities in the Western Hemisphere. If not the largest. I would recommend looking at a specific area in which you are interested i.e. zip code. Crime per person is supposedly low in Houston. The website below is put out by the Houston Police Department and my clients find it to be very useful. Good luck.

As with everything, it's best if you do your own research. I am providing some links to get you started, but I'd strongly recommend driving through the areas that you're interested in - both during the day and at night.

There are certain areas of Houston you would need to be more careful than others. There are also plenty of areas where walking a dog or a child is very safe. Let common sense prevail.

Crime overall in Houston is low, there are emerging parts of the city where it is more of an issue than some of the well known well established neighborhoods.

Crime is always an issue in a city as big as Houston, but there are, of course, areas where crime is much worse than others. The neighborhoods usually have some sort of crime watch in their area or are patrolled by the Houston Police. Overall, for a city as big as Houston, our crime is pretty low.
