Is Hell's Kitchen safe?

Asked by Jsokachitch, Lockport, IL Sat Sep 29, 2012

Hi, thinking of moving to Manhattan. Saw some good apartments that were cheap in Hell's Kitchen, Does anyone know if its safe? Also the Greenwich Village area, West Village, UES, UWS, and SoHo area?

Growing up around the city and witnessing the changes in H.K as well as other parts of the city, it's a very different town. I suggest going to the site, check out the crime stats as well as the Village, etc...I would also consider walking around at night, get a feel for the area, all of the city changes during the day, to mid-day to the early evening into the late evenings. You'll always find the speed freaks, tweekers and johns cruising the streets in the wee hours of the morning. It comes with the territory, best of luck go with your gut!!!

Sure - just take a stroll down 9th Ave and see all the great restaurants and bars... and how built up the area is - it's not your grandmother's Hell's Kitchen anymore!!

Although I' m not a Manhattan agent, even I know all the other areas you listed are extremely desirable (my son lives on the UES).

That being said, as with ANY large city - it's always prudent to be alert when walking alone late at night no matter where you are (even in the suburbs!!).

Best wishes

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Despite its name, the area is incredibly safe. In fact, all the neighborhoods on your list are equally if not slightly more sought after.

There really are no downsides in living in Hell's Kitchen.
