but I keep hearing that some areas are so dangerous? Is this true and any advice where to stay away from?
contact the local PD or even take a look at some of the local newspapers to get a feel of the area. Your on the net so use it, google it!!
good luck with you new home!
I agree with my fellow realtors. The best people to tell you about crime and how dangerous a neighborhood can be are the police officers that work those areas. I would suggest you call the local precinct and tell them your concerns about areas. They can answer much better then anyone else. As for buying an apartment,Team Ted of Coldwell Banker M & D Goodlife are VERY knowledgable in that area and can answer ANY and ALL questions and get you a Great Deal!! The DIRECT Number is 631-680-0079. Good Luck!!
Heather, Gail is right. That said, you should speak to Brian Jata, manager of the Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate Office in Medford. He and his team are tops in your area. Here's his contact info:

To answer that question would be against the law for a Realtor. We are not allowed to comment on neighborhoods or schools; we can be the source of the source. Go to my website http://GailGladstone.com and click on school info or community info. Check with the local police precincts for crime levels.
