I'm a single woman who likes to go running outside. Would it be safe for me to move to downtown Sacramento, and if so which areas? If not,

Valentina; Go to http://www.city-data.com and also get information from the local police department near Downtown Sacramento and ask them the question.

Then get a dog to run with you. Statistics show that running with a dog, (even a small dog), really improves safety for women runners. I run every day with my German Shepherd and feel really safe!!!!

I live in Midtown and do not walk around after dark in the winter. On summer nights people are out and about fairly late and I feel much more comfortable. I have a client that runs. She bought a house in Midtown, but runs 5 blocks to McKinley Park in East Sacramento to get her miles in. There is so much activity at McKinley Park, day and night, that you are never alone. Curtis Park has lots of runners, people walking dogs, and families strolling in the evenings. There are many runners in Land Park as well, on the path and on neighborhood streets. This park is not well lit at night. Downtown after dark is really not a safe place for a single woman to run.

My personal bets for safest neighborhoods near downtown are East Sac (especially near the McKinley Park area... but really anything east of Alhambra and north of Folsom) and River Park. You really can't go wrong in these areas.

Midtown, Land Park, and Curtis Park are also close to downtown--and all have particular sections that are considered desirable and safe. I just don't know those areas well enough to say where.

I'd avoid downtown proper. It's just fine during the workday, but it's pretty deserted evenings and weekends, and not somewhere you'd want to be hanging out by yourself.
