I am considering moving from Massachusetts to Highlands Ranch. What is the crime activity like? Is it considered safe?

Hi Joe -- wow, are you in for culture shock!!! Seriously, realtors aren't supposed to quote crime statistics (just go on line and Google "crime in Highlands Ranch") but I can say with certainty that Highlands Ranch is one of the safest suburbs in the Denver Metro area.

Obviously, there is crime everywhere but if you stay in Douglas (Highlands Ranch) county -- also includes Parker, Castle Rock or Arapahoe county, you should have no problems.

Hope this helps. Julie Montgomery, RE/MAX Masters, Inc., Littleton, CO I work with a lot of relocation buyers, so don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions at 303-906-3150. My website is

Are you commenting on my post? If so, I think you need to re-read what I wrote, maybe you misunderstood what I was saying. Why am I in for a culture shock? Also to clarify, I was saying H.R. is very safe.

As a 10 year resident of Highlands Ranch, I can assure you that this is a very safe community with little crime. My wife and I are currently raising three kids in the community and have selected this area becasue it is considered very safe and has great schools. We could not be more happy with the Highlands Community and the lifestyle of provides. Please see for some stats on crime rates in the area. Let me know if I can be of further assistance with your future relocation.

Hi Stacy,

For some reason, this question of yours came up and it appears to be over one-year since you asked. Did you ever make the transition from MA to CO? If not, I am originally from the northeast, I lived in a suburb of Philly and worked for American Express throughout the PA, NJ and NY areas. I've lived in the west for over ten years and worked for almost two years for the Colorado Office of Economic Development. Highlands Ranch, as well as nearby areas, are wonderful areas for professionals as well as their families. There are great schools, lots of parks and recreation, commuter train, restaurants and shopping integrated as part of the Highlands Ranch, and what we call the regional area of South Metro Denver. Let me know if you'd like to have a more in-depth conversation, I specialize in relocation. If you've relocated and would enjoy meeting a new friend, call me.

My best,

I lived in Weymouth, Hingham, Marblehead and Peabody for years and now have been in Highlands Ranch since 2006. Highlands Ranch is the Best of them all.

Highlands Ranch is the hottest and most desirable location in all of the Denver Metro Area. To get crime stats you can contact the Douglas County Sheriffs office and they can provide you with that information. I have worked/lived in Highlands Ranch for quite some time now and would be very comfortable raising a family here. Good luck with your move! My team specializes in Relocation's, so if you are seriously considering moving- please reach out to us. We'd love to help you!

Gangs and graffiti here means 8 year olds on bikes and chalk drawings in the driveways.

Hello Stacy,
I am not a realitor so I will give you an answer based on my 8 years living in Highlands Ranch. I lived in the Boston area for 30 years before moving here. Highlands Ranch is as safe as any suburb in Boston in my opinion. In our local papers police blotter, there is sometimes minor house burglaries, car vandalism, etc., more teenage stuff than anything.
I would add that we have a 2 year old and another on the way and we are buying our second house in Highlands Ranch. We feel safe. Is H.R. like the Berkshires, no, however it is only 30 min from Denver so I would compare like any town within the 95/495 belt such as Newton, Wellesley, Natick, etc.

We also moved out to Colorado from MA in 1993! From Cape Cod to be exact. I will say I agree with the others about where you should find the information you need. We have lived in Highlands Ranch since 1996 and I can not think of a better place to raise our kids even without an ocean near by!

It is good to get answers; but whether the other brokers here are aware of it or not, we as Realtors are not allowed to comment on crime and safety issues in a community according to our respective boards of Realtors. We actually can be sanctioned. But we can refer you to good sources for you to do research for yourself. Here is one - . Let me know if you need further help in making your decision to move this direction.

Dear Stacy,

I also agree with the people who are pointing toward contacting local law enforcement for crime statistics and data. I do, however, have to say I would not be an almost 24 year resident of Highlands Ranch if I felt unsafe. I have raised both of my kids in Highlands Ranch and could not be happier.
I would be happy to speak with you in person and show you personally what our great community has to offer.

Feel free to contact me at any time.

Best Regards,

The general consensus is that it's considered safe. I live with my family in Highlands Ranch and we have never felt unsafe. A great website to compare and contrast cities when it comes to overall economy, crime rates, cost of living etc. is I hope this helps!

Those who offered to point you to the local police for this information are the best informed. The police are truly the ones who know best and can answer all your questions. If you want to shop homes, visit my site and or call me and we can discuss all the Highlands Ranch or other neighborhoods have to offer.

While there is crime everywhere, HIghlands Ranch, by comparison to Colorado and the US Averages, has lower crime rates across all categories. For a quick look, Areavibes ( gives a nice breakdown of crime stats and you should be able to compare against the town where you live too. Highlands Ranch is policed by Douglas County Sheriff ( who you can also contact for more information. You can also check the Colorado government website for sex offenders: (
I hope you make the move to Colorado.

Highlands Ranch is a very popular bedroom community. For crime stats search Douglas County Colorado sheriff department. My sister had loved living there for 14 years.

I live in Highlands Ranch and it's a suburb of Denver. Call local police, Douglas County. I always advise my clients to call about the specific neighborhoods they are interested in and even specific streets to check if there are any registered sex offenders or if there has been any police activity of any kind. You can even request to speak with police officers who patrol individual neighborhoods!
