Although Crown Heights' Hasidim live all over the neighborhood, the core of the "shchuna" lies roughly between Nostrand, Empire, Troy, and Eastern Parkway. The main drag is Kingston Ave, one block west of Albany. Violent crime committed by members of this community against outsiders is almost unheard of, although its members are sometimes viewed as easy targets by others. The Hasidic sect in Crown Heights (Chabad/Lubavitch,) while unquestionably devout, is also very modern, embraces technology, speaks English (vs. Yiddish,) and has its own organic community garden, art galleries, and open mike nights. If you're just looking for a place to sleep and not a community to contribute to, you'll find people on the block friendly and approachable. This part of the neighborhood is already quite nice and cannot, in the long run, benefit from so-called "gentrification" as religious families with children are forced to move to the furthest reaches to make way for people who don't know about the neighborhood and would be just as happy somewhere else. (I'm not a Lubavitcher, by the way- no Lubavitcher would ever be rude enough to say this to a stranger, but it irks me all the same.)

I actually grew up around this area and know it very well. I will be honest with you that it does have a high crime rate compared to other areas. As a female that knows this area very well, I would not suggest it to a single female.

If I can help you find something feel free to give me a call.

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.…

The above is a link that you might find useful, but I find that you really have to walk through a neighborhood to know the ins and outs.

Also, do call the 71st precinct as Marshalle Phillips below had said. I believe you can find their number in the link I have provided.

The 71st precinct services that area. You can contact them or go online to research thee stats. I would be happy to assist you in your rentals needs, if you would like.
