Asked by Infinity Realty Network, Saratoga, CA Tue Oct 30, 2007

That was a pretty big one here at my part of the woods. Its been so long i forgot what it felt like. Whats your ideas on Earthquake insurance and procedure after an earthquake. Best ways to check your house for damage.

Locate your fire extinguisher. Sniff like a bloodhound. If you smell any gas at all, shut down your inflow, get outside and stay outside if you smell gas in the house. Wait until P.G. E or the FD give you the all clear.

When it is daylight, check your chimneys, your foundation and everything else for cracks. Check windows and doors to see if they still open and close properly. Check for cracked glass, shifted or buckled floors.

Some hidden items might be discovered months or even years after the quake. Even if there is no declaration cehck the FEMA site for inspection tips.

Yeah that was decent shaker...I think the smartest thing to do is be prepared by making sure large items in your house are strapped down and anchored. It's amazing how some really heavy appliances, bookshelves, and cabinets can move and fall when there are strong earthquakes. The USGS has put out an excellent product called "Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country" and can be helpful for homeowners new to California or ones that have not prepared for the "big one".

http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/2005/15/ is the site to check it out.

Also the Association of Bay Area Govements site at http://quake.abag.ca.gov/ has tons of info on how to make your home and business safer.

It's been so long since I lived in California. We had a series of little quakes when I was in the 3rd grade. That would have been around 1970. I remember doing Earthquake drills in school! Everywhere else I've lived we had fire drills. Thanks for the memories!
