Does anyone know if Oceanview is a safe neighborhood in SF?

Asked by Momof2, San Francisco, CA Wed Apr 15, 2009

I'm looking at houses in the area and would be moving there as a single mom with my young children.

I have live in the Ocenview area for over 49 years. 5 years ago I would have said not to move there. But going into 2013 Oceanview is a great place to live. The only issue I ever had was the weather during the summer is not hot, always cold. No matter where you move is not safe anywhere these days.

Yes, I've lived here for a year now. I heard it used to be a very rough neighborhood. My wife and young son have found it to be safe and family friendly. We live on Montana Street a block away from Oceanview Rec Center, and that area is mostly families, very diverse, and a lot of nice people. I have heard there may be crime on the perimeter, but have never seen it or heard about it. My wife and I take our son to the park all the time with no problems, and enjoy the restaurants and shops just 2 blocks north of the neighbor on Ocean Ave. Whole Foods, 24 Hour fitness, some very good Thai, Laotian, Vietnamese restaurants as well as burger joints - Beep Burgers! Young single mom with young children should have no problem in Oceanview.

Hi MomOf2,

Trulia has a Crime Maps feature which can help you determine the crime levels of neighborhoods, as well as help you find good schools and amenities in the area.

Here is our link fo Oceanview, San Francisco: http://www.trulia.com/local/#crimes/oceanview-san-francisco

Mom,

Here is a link to the crime stats website that Jed referred to - http://www.sfgov.org/site/police_index.asp?id=23813

Crime is going to occur pretty much everywhere in the city, but keep in mind that San Francisco is very much a block-by-block city in many cases. For example, there are areas in the Mission where I live that are very safe, and others where crime and gang activity is rampant.

In addition to spending time in the Oceanview area, you can call the Ingleside station non-emergency number to get their feedback on the neighborhood as a whole and if there are parts that are particularly good or bad. That number is (415) 553-0123 and the link to the Ingleside station info site is http://www.sfgov.org/site/police_index.asp?id=19972

Safe is a very relative term. What is safe for you might not be safe for me or vice versa. The best adveice you can get is to go there at various times of the day and days of the week to see how you feel.

You can also look at SFPD crime reports for every area of the city bu going to sfgov.org site and then the police department web site. Although remember you are looking at the litany of problems and not actually experiencing the sense of a place.
