It is wise of you to research the crime stats before purchasing a home. There are multiple ways to do this. YOu can go to the citys website and look it up here: http://spotcrime.com/tx/austin . Or you can call the local police department and ask about a specific address. I wish you the best of luck with your potential home purchase.
Although I am not sure these things really tell you a lot. Lots of condos downtown for example.
Probably not that much home invasions in a place like that (I'm guessing)...however there are
probably lots of street crime that may or may not affect you.
Murders...kidnappings things like that are likely most often between people who know each other in Austin, not just some random street crime. Again that's my guess.
So good luck deciphering the reports and what is or is not a safe area?
Probably the best source of information is your Community Resource Officer at the local PD. Just give them a call.
Go here: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/GIS/crimeviewer/CrimeViewer_discl
For your specific use:
-->Change search field from "Address Radius Search" to "Geographic Location Search"
-->Change Location Type from "Neighborhood" to "Zip Code"
-->Enter zip code.
Dates can be modified to include up to two years worth of data.

As a Lakeway resident as well, I have asked this very same question. You will need to call the Lakeway Police Department, as they do not post any statistics or information on the city's website.
