Get in your car tonight, roll the windows down and drive the area. Listen and observe. You can research online and probably find distinct borders that reveal more incidents in one area vs. another immediate area. I attached Trulia's crime maps beta link - it's got super cool graphics.

However, there is no substitute for hitting the streets.

Susan,

Take a look at the Atlanta police department's website below and enter the address you are interested in. It gives a great deal of detail about they types of crime committed and when they occurred over a specified period of time.

If you are familiar with Atlanta, be sure to compare the data you find for that area with that for areas you are familiar with. You might also try contacting the precinct for that area, and best of all, spend some time in the area at different times of day and different days of the week. Talk to everyone you meet on these visits and get their impressions.

Where ever you move, be safe. Always be aware of you surroundings, be discrete with your phone, laptop and valuables, and do not make yourself, your car, or home a target. Keep valuables hidden from sight.

The best way to get this information is to contact the local police department and ask for a crime stats report for the area. It will be a small fee, but it will list all incidents that have occurred in the area.

Real estate agents are not allowed to comment on a variety of topics. The Fair Housing Act restricts the information that can be provided by a real estate agent.

Off Limit Topics Include:
• Crime Statistic (including questions about whether a neighborhood is good or bad or safe)
• Demographics
• Environmental Concerns
• Household Income
• Religion
• Schools (including questions about how good or bad the school is)

Determining to the answers to questions on any of the topics listed above is something that you would need to do on your own. It is up to the individual to make their own determination about a specific area. If a real estate agent were to comment on such a thing, it could be steering which is a prohibited act.
