Being approved by a landlord to rent can be determined by many factors. Credit, rental history, employment status, pets, etc....

Having poor credit can hurt your cause but if you have good references and stable income to support the rent often landlords will look past it.

I recommend:

* getting references from former landlords
* offering more security deposit
* asking for a face-to-face interview with the landlord to explain your situation

Speaking with a lender to determine how you can improve your credit is important. Often very minor things need to happen for your score to increase.

Absolutely, but you'll have to find a landlord willing to accept your credit as it currently stands. I agree in asking if paying a higher security deposit, or upfront rent would be acceptable. There are renters who have been previously foreclosed on with credit issues who I see approach landlords with paying 6 months upfront and often get it done. Good luck!

As the previous agent pointed out, yes, it might still be possible. Other options for helping your case might be offering to pay more security deposit or pre-paying a few months rent.

Much will depend on the individual landlord; therefore do be upfront as to why your credit may be amiss; also consider having letters of reference handy, proof employment, etc.
