Hi Michael

You should first request a Tax Identification number from the IRS. You will receive it once your tax Person submits your tax return. It will be a nine digit number. You should be able to use that to open a bank account. You can then ask your bank for a secured credit card or line of credit. Use it in place of cash and pay it on time. This will help you to have some form of credit score; however, you will not be able to purchase a home or finance a car until you receive your SSN. Good luck

Hi Michael,

Are you looking to obtain a credit score for the purpose of applying for a rental? If so, International credit can be run, although it won't give you an actual credit score. The management company can go through a provider like Credit Retriever, they can run your international credit as long as you provide your full name, foreign tax ID and your current international mailing address. If you are looking to obtain an actual credit score, you should apply for a US SSN and start building up your credit score by using credit cards etc. It takes about 6 months to establish credit. If you have a US SSN and no established credit, many rental options may require extra security deposit or upfront payments. I hope that helps!

Michael,

I am going to give you the contact information of a mortgage banker (not a bank) who is quite knowledgeable in this area.

Feel free to email Brian Tom at btom@cliffcomortgage.com; I am sure he can help you shed some light on this.
