pmccarthy says: ". . . I live one block into central islip, islip terrace is right near me. We feel we should have never bought here and really do not want to put that much money back into our house. We've kept it up and also just put a new fence up. Hope we don't get graffiti on it. We have made no friends in the area, peple keep to themselves. Very unfriendly area. This is one of our regrets in life, buying in Central islip."
Did you know that Islip Terrace used to be a part of Central Islip?
You can do things that are inexpensive to improve your curb appeal. Add some new planters/plants... maybe a flag... a pond or a statue... add windowboxes... and some brightly-colored paint and a seasonally-appropriate wreath on your front door.
You think your neighbors aren't friendly? OK. Bring them a philodendron in a pot this spring. Offer to start a gardening club. Plant some herbs and tomatoes in a community and have a summer BBQ together. How about joining the fire department as volunteers? Or reading stories to the kids at the library? Deliver a box of candy and a holiday card at Christmas time to every single neighbor on your block, and invite them over for hot cocoa during an open house. Arrange a block-long garage sale in the summer, with free lemonade.
The athletic teams of the Central Islip School District have a tradition of winning Section XI Sportsmanship Awards as well as NYSPHSAA Scholar/Athlete Team Awards. The Hoboes and Jr. Hoboes - our fire department racing team - often are winners at the State Championship games.
If since 1985 you have made NO friends among your neighbors, and all you can think of doing is to flee, then you are part of the problem of C.I., not part of the solution, The same goes for any neighborhood, anywhere. You say it's a poor area, yet you won't loan-out your tools. *sigh* How do you expect it to get any better? Loan your tools and ask if you can help! Work together. And sure, the schools may not be great. So step up, and work to improve them! Stay put, dig in your heels, and BE a good neighbor to GET good neighbors. Stop hiding behind your house's facade, fearing of the unknown.
Best wishes - TJC, your neighbor in C.I. between Carleton and Islip Avenues... more
