Hi Holly did you move to Black mountain? I Love this area but like you I worry about the schools. I also have a gifted son who unfortunately did not come from a gifted mom Ha Ha. Home schooling is out for me. Thanks!... more
You need to run this by a loan officer, but if it is your primary residence right now, you should qualify for a reverse mortgage. You have to continue living there - once it's no longer a primary residence, you have to refinance or sell.... more
We've lived in NC our whole life - and I can tell you that February is one of the prettiest months - with clear Carolina Blue skies, and crocus bulbs blooming. My wife is a gardener, and we can be outside, enjoying mild winters 95% of the time.... more
I was born in NC,lived ,worked and grew 35% of our food in the seventies in Marion a neighboring town.I have just moved back 2 years ago.Yes Black Mountain is higher in cost for homes ,taxes etc. Most who live here are retired or  own their own business ,some medical professionals, artist, others are established low non professional jobs which makes up the largest group,as well as farmers and elderly and a few professionals.Limited Doctors and health care facilities...Veterinarians I would not use as the local vet accidently killed our dog and what  I thought might be an isolated incident untill I listened to over 6 other pet owners similar stories. There is an ingles with somewhat fair prices and a better selection of products than some other ingles, including a salad and food bar. There is a compound pharmacy in town that is a little pricey on some of their supplies ,but carries a wide selection of health products. There is a wonerful herbalist who is very kind, knowledgeble and helpful. Montreat college is minutes away and has good activities including good speakers to spend the evening listening to.
I Â agree that it can be expensive to live in Black Mountain and I believe the economy coupled with the greed of money from some brings many things to not "keep value with dollars balanced".Yet if you live here you find that the customer card at ingles, wise shopping,Spice it up's 10% resident discount, town clearance sections, sale items and sharing and caring neighbors makes it a little more affordable.I must say without a doubt Black Mountain's greatest asset is the people. They are kind hearted, loving ,helpful ,giving. Those whom have lived here for generations as well as "some of those "who have been blessed to come to BM to visit or vacation and chose to move here.
That being said ,Ashville has all you ever need in the way of great shopping, doctors, hospitals, veterinarians.education entertainment. You can find many good bargains on homes in quaint neighborhoods on the outskirts of Ashville as well as condos and town home .There are over 12 foreclosured homes in Black Mounatin as of today that might represent a good find.I don't know what you are looking for.I do however tell those who are looking for a new town to first go there and "rent" for a year and walk among the people ,stores and parks etc to get a good feel for the town to see if you and the town are a good fit.I love this town and the people. It is however higher cost in most everything than I experienced in Orlando Florida for over 25 years there. That saddens me and forces me to be more frugal and inventive than I use to be.Yet the beauty of the mountains and the wonderful people of Black Mountain makes it worth it.Hope this gives you a little to go on in your search.... more
Black Mountain is a cool town, but very expensive. Whoever said it is affordable apparently did not live in NC before. Compared to the rest of the State the homes here are outrageous. the job market is challenging here as well. But, I suppose the people who are moving here from elsewhere think it is cheap, which forces us native North Carolinians to settle for less since we cannot afford these prices. The town itself is an average small town, very walkable, and quiet for the most part. I just don't get the home prices. People will say "Oh but its Black Mountain". What the heck is that supposed to mean?... more
