Salisbury, Twp is a nice little area Not a bad little area, but I'd advise to stay away from the South 4th street area, it's not so classy. I rent an apartment on Emmaus Ave near Salisbury High School.
Kidspeace is close if you're working in mental health prob the largest mental health employer in the area. Macungie is nice and close to there but if you're looking for more activity (cultural, shops, restaurants) I'd look in the direction of Bethlehem (historic or north, not south).... more
I have lived in that area all of my life, except the last 2 years. East Allentown?? seriously, are you trying to really anger these people?
You want to stay away from Allentown school district completely. For some reason it has a decent rating, but it's awful. Although some of the elementary schools are fine, the high school is like a military zone....complete with recent molestation charges. You definitely want to pick this area by schools, not necessarily towns. if you are going to send your children to private school, then it's a different story and you can buy something in the deep west end of Allentown-- beautiful old historic homes there. Otherwise, you want to stick to Parkland school district, East Penn, Salisbury, which is going to be South Whitehall township, macungie, Emmaus, parts of Allentown, You really need a realtor to help you with this to stay out of Allentown school district. A little further out is OK, however Northwestern school district isn't as good, my niece and nephews transferred from Northwestern to East Penn and were so far behind it was crazy. Parkland and East Penn are huge schools, graduating classes of 1000 or more...Salisbury is small, graduating classes 150. All good schools. You want to stay in western salisbury, not Eastern. Center city Allentown is- or has become a very dangerous area.....you definitely want to be as far away from that area as possible.....I once had a patient who moved here from Maryland, and a realtor talked her into a home on 5th street in Allentown, told her it was a great area. you risk your life there.....houses are extremely cheap- and there's a reason for that. If you start to think about Bethlehem you have the same situation- need to be careful of where you go. Stay away from Reading area.
I'm going to tell you this though....people in this area are not big on people moving from New York and New Jersey because the real estate is much cheaper and schools are good....it has majorly driven up real estate prices and caused certain schools to have to expand and taxes go up....which has caused much resentment and anger....you have a very closed PA Dutch type community. If you have a NY accent, that alone is going to turn people off right away. I'm being honest with you. if you want to move to this area, you need to move here completely, no "in NYC we have"....or comments about how different it is or a bunch of country hicks etc...all of which I have experienced. And unless you move into center city allentown, you are not going to find an extensively culturally diverse area. Especially in Salisbury...although it has improved. If you move here, you need to assimilate into the area, be humble, listen, keep things low key until people realize you are OK.....then you can let loose. I am being completely honest with you instead of sugar coating and "hey I'm a realtor let me help you move into the worst area there is because I'm not going to sell that house to anybody else from the area". Some of the center city allentown homes are gorgeous, originally were the best of the best, woodwork, huge rooms, gorgeous stairs.......but you risk your life leaving your house. Good luck, depending on your price range it's a little tough right now, under $200,000 are all short sales, estates, foreclosures, (I know because i'm looking too), from $200,000 to $300,000 nobody is selling because they are all under water, go above that and you're fine.... more
