What are the top attributes you look for in an assistant?

We will be hiring a new assistant in the next month and wanted to get others opinions as to what the most important attributes you look for in assistants. We believe we are only as strong as our weakest person, so every person must be A

The best assistants are those that contribute toward making those they are responsible to more productive. The very best are those that are "self starters" taking the initiative to do what needs to be done without being asked to do it. Being able to function in this manner requires a strong background in real estate experience, office operations, and a desire to be part of a winning team.

It's tough! I've trained and placed over 15 assitants/receptionist/TC's and there is no magic formula. Most people like in any industry always are amazing during interview process and become totally different later!

Best things to watch for:
-Experience, high admin background is a plus!
-Phone/Client manurisms, assistants are an extension of you, how do they handle the phone and client issues
-Tech background, are they familiar with all basic software programs and maybe ones a bit more complex...that will show they can pick up winforms, sandicor, etc.
-Train, train, train them. I see alot of agents that don't spend the time training their new assistant and expect them to "just know", being an assistant is a unique role to each broker. Teach them how you and where you need help.

and remember part of the natural progression of any person is to want to become a Realtor.... so understand they are not forever.

Extensive experience as an admin assistant is a great starting point. Personable, quick study, self-starter and proven ability to excel in a fast paced environment.

Someone very familiarized with the MLS. More than any other asset, I appreciate the fact that my assistants are able to navigate the MLS, no questions asked. We work with a great number of clients both Buyers and Sellers, I do not delegate easy, its something I have had to work with through the years, I am so glad when I am delivered a property search just as I asked.

Team building is an exciting time.
It's all about the match.
You have to write down exactly what you are looking for.
What type of experience, skills, schedule, geographical location, motivation, and personality and most of all the trust factor.

Once you have your description written out, when you interview the right person you will just know.
Plus you will have your list to reference and if they meet all of your criteria it can be an easy decision.
If it's not a "Slam Dunk Fit", then don't hire. Keep interviewing.
If your gut tells you "Something isn't clicking" then, dont' hire, keep interviewing.
Give yourself a full month of interviewing. That way, you don't jump at the first good person.
Slow to hire, quick to fire.
