John, when the agent contacted me through a lead, not a phone call, I was professional, reponded to the questions in the lead regarding a $200,000 property and also included a signed referral stating that I would be more than happy to assit their buyer in a search for a home. A week later another lead came in from the same agent inquirying about another home and the area, . And again, I responded to the questions, inqjuired about the referral, and called the agent(no answer). Immediately received a reponse, agent had NOT decided whether or not to pay a referral but hoped I would just help the buyer he represented and then if there was a sale would pay the referral.

Axel, I hear you!

Annette, yes absolutely. I have many agents I network with, glad to send them general information, even a list of properties, and do NOT ask for a referral. They have done the same for me. We network and help each other. And yes we have paid and received referrals based on the transaction.

This particular agent was not professtional! I received 2 LEADS generated from a website from this realtor asking me to assist their buyer find a home - because they are not familiar with the area and then say they are not willing to pay me a referral...

I wish the agent well... hope he finds a agent willing to assist his buyers for free....

In Palm Harbor Fl and Rockport TX, the community of real estate professionals should look forward to the opportunity to assist the other with buyer and sellers moving into and out of our respective locations. Referral fees, however, must be taken in context.
Some folks come to this area looking to purchase a $30,000 condo. If a agent is expecting a referral fee from that, they have come to the wrong agent.
If the agent intends to attach a referral fee to this and all future transactions, they have come to the wrong agent. (Yep, that was the family friend agent who has perfected gold mining."
If the agent intends to attach a referral to this and all transactions by all relatives listed and/or sharing the same household, they have come to the wrong agent..
Will I be rude? Depends on how you react to being referred to as, "Jellybean." It's amazing how these agents, to whom I referenced, worked within the same NY based national franchise!

Don't you get a signed referral agreement before starting work? Never leave the office without one...
