I remember back in the 80's when "Desk Fees" were introduced to the Real Estate Community.
A Broker I know offered "100% Commission" minus Franchise Fees (of 5 or 8%) to any agent that agreed to pay him "desk fees" of $1500 per month.
He quickly signed over 100 agents - which meant that he instantly established a $150,000 per month (gross) business!
Problem was, with 100 agents in our small city wearing the same Franchise Name, and knocking on the same doors - well, let's just say not everybody made the money that they had hoped to make.
