How do you dress?

On one occasion while showing property, a silicon valley client told me I looked like I was going to court. How do you determine what you wear?

Gosh!...Going to court?
Well here in Los Angeles, the dress code is pretty casual, not old jeans, but just about anything else goes..and even shorts in the beach areas.. I suppose if people are this opinionated you could always ask them if they have a preference.

I haven't worn a dress in quite a while; people tell me it makes me look frumpy.

Maybe you need a stylist to help you choose your wardrobe. You can't go around looking frumpy. It will ruin the image of Realtors!

Always dress for success, and the seasons. Unfortunately people do judge a book by its cover so I'd rather look professional then not. I may not always wear a suit but at least dress pants, shirt, and tie.

I think you need to look professional at all times and dress according to what types of homes you are showing. Wearing heels and a dress probably wouldn't work if you are showing properties in the country or rural areas and walking around the fields etc. If you are showing luxury homes I certainly wouldn't be dressed in blue jeans.

If I'm going to the office: Casual. Jeans and a dress shirt with my cool pointy shoes. If it's summer, khaki shorts and a t shirt.

If I'm going to a listing appointment: Dress pants and a tucked in dress shirt. No tie.

If I'm meeting new buyers for the first time: Same as above.

If I'm going to a funeral: Suit and tie.

A notch better than the buyer or seller you are representing, but fully functional.

How often have you been faced with a gaggle of folks in the front yard and you couldn't distinquish the professional real estate person from the lawn service dudes and/or the client(s)?

May have some bearing on that 'image' thing so many flap about.
If you want to be viewed professionally, how you set the stage can establish the context.

You see my picture? I never wear a jacket. It would have to be 45 degrees and sunny for me to wear a jacket. It was 42 degrees when I took that photo!

I wear Tommy Bahama silk trousers and either TB shirts or Signum shirts I get from Vancouver.

I usually always wear jeans and a cute blouse. I am too clumsy to dress in heels and be expected to walk up stairs. It is hot in Houston so by the time the showing is over, my clients and I are usually sweating profusely and dying for AC.

I wear a suit every time. The only time I do not wear a suit is when I show distressed properties, then it is sneakers jeans and a flashlight. I all depends on the situation. I wouldn't worry about this persons comment. whatever makes you feel good and professional is what you should were.

Here in Miami anything goes, I have not worn slacks and a jacket in God knows how long. If a potential customer looks at me "funny" then I know there was no chemistry and on I go, got to let the more sophisticated make a little bit of money ;)

In Scottsdale all the high end Realtors dress like "Country Club Casual". A golf shirt and golf skirt is my uniform. Perfect for showing golf properties.

I like to think I dress for success. It is definitely hot in the summer month is AZ so my dress attire is usually a sleeveless dress that looks professional but at the same time is cool and comfy, and a pair of nice low heeled sandals. I still remember a homeowner telling me how shocked she was to see an agent showing a property in cut offs and a t-shirt--I've never forgotten that because besides dressing the part for our clients there are all kinds of potential clients out there watching what we do and how we look.
