Yes they are both a Real Estate Brokerage firms that gives a huge percentage of their commissions to their buyers and sellers. The buyers and sellers basically do most of the work and they write the contracts and gives anywhere from 1 to 2% of their commissions back.

As Barbara mentioned, these companies have two sides: they publish syndicated listings on the web and they are a brokerage that sells the properties that they feature on their sites. Their claim to fame is discounted or rebated commissions.
If you're considering signing up to be an "affilitate" - read your current agent contract first is you have one. My agent contract forbids signing a simultaneous contract with other brokers, including these guys.

Hi Jerry,

Over the past few years I cannot tell you the number of times someone has come to one of my open houses and when I asked how they heard about it, the answer is "Redfin". Many state while they are not using a Redfin agent, they like their website because they feel it is user friendly. Personally, I didn't see anything too compelling about it.

Jerry - there are a number of agents in my area that are asking our MLS system to offer a "buffet" of sites to syndicate their listings on rather than "all or none." I hope agents in other areas will do the same.

Jerry,
You can assume if your listing appear on Realtor.com their is NO REASON they would not appear on these websites also.

It is very much worth your while to go to these websites as a consumer and download or read their consumer contract. This, you will find, to be very important to you. You NEED to know what the consumer is being tempted with.

Thanks everyone for your answers. I can't stand websites like ziprealty and redfin from what I understand of them. I wish we didnt have to publish or sundicate our listings to hundreds of real estate websites, it would be great if the public all just used realtor.com.
