Do you have a regular day off?

Real estate people work some crazy hours sometimes if they allow clients to control the schedule. But does anyone have a one particular day each week you always take off? Why?

Mondays and Fridays, but the phone still follows me :(
Sundays before church the phone is OFF! After time with Jesus the race is on!

Thanks all for some great perspectives.

Rick - you're right, clients will take over your schedule if boundaries aren't established. I've found that clients worth having will respect your time more than clients who only waste your time anyway.

Connie - I have a friend who swears she has never worked on Sundays in over 30 years in real estate. She's closed at least $30M in single family home sales every year in the six years I've known her (my calculation based on properties I've seen her list and sell - she doesn't work with buyers).

Annette - Friday is one of my busiest days, but Monday is a good day off. I've never felt guilty about going fishing while everyone else goes to work.

Joan - Lee Iacocca, former CEO of Chrysler, didn't like workaholics on his staff and always urged them to take time off. He said, "how could I trust $800M to roll out a new car to a man who can't even plan well enough to spend time with his family?"

Suz - I like the one day scenario. Taking an afternoon here and there isn't the same.

Hi John,

I try to take Sunday off to be with the family but it does not always work out. but its definitely more leisurely then any other day of the week.

I try to schedule days off during the week whenever possible..you can get very tired if you don't!

Bill - I think it's the agents who are nuts about working, clients usually understand office hours and days off. Unless, of course, they miss getting a house because offers needed to be in while the agent is sunning by the pool. P.S. I always win at slots.

Rick - I agree. We don't do Sunday open houses during the NFL season or the World Series. Clients usually want Sundays off, too.

Judi - I read a study a few years ago that said it's better to leave the phone on so that you can relax knowing that nothing is wrong or the phone would be ringing. A lot of stress can build up if you turn off the phone, because you're left wondering if the world got destroyed by an asteroid and no one called to let you know (or the business equivalent). If someone calls on my day off or after hours I might answer, but if they want anything done I'll tell them it will get done when normal work hours resume.

While it feels like I never completely off per se because the phone can reach me wherever I am, I do try to protect Sunday and Monday to work from home or better yet, relax! I have found out the hard way that I do need time to recharge and if I don't then nothing works well in my business.

Some agents won't agree with me, however I like to take Sundays off. To me its the slowest day of the week to sell a house.

Trying to pick a less active day is like trying beat the slots.......

As a real working real estate agent, is there any such thing as a "day off?"

If you allow prospects and or clients control you schedule they will. Nobody is a super agent. We all need time to sleep, time to rest and time for the family. Create a balance life and schedule and keep with it. You will actually be more productive and happy.

I ALWAYS take FRIDAY off to rejuvinate for the weekend.

On another note, I ALWAYS use the current day of the week when asked this question by a buyer or seller.

They rarely notice. They do think about it and it becomes an important 'later' conversation.

Practicly speaking...Mondays work best for me. Beaches are not crowded, Attractions are void of kids. Traffic is reduced. Everyone else is tired and recuperating.

No,I don't have a "regular" set aside day off. And I wonder if I did would it be like what happens when I plan a vacation. You know . . . That's when my business really is rockin' and rolling and it's so difficult to get away! I'm available to my buyers and sellers the proverbial 24/7. :-)

I mostly stack 'em up for the fall and winter. I take a deserving day off. Mondays are great if "the call" comes after buyers have had a night to think on things. At least one day is advisable for re-charging the batteries.
