Are you seeing spoofs online of your listings?

Asked by Wendy Banner & The Banner Team, Bethesda, MD Thu Jul 25, 2013

Seems like my earlier post was deleted or not posted - issue this past week with a rental listing posted that spoofed our listing for sale asking prospective tenants to send $1400 cash to lease our listing. Several savvy people calling to confirm the listing is legit (it's not). Is this is happening to others?

These scams are very prevalent all over the internet. And they're hardly "spoofs"... they downright scams trying to bilk unsavvy renters out of their hard-earned money.

When you see one of those, on Trulia, please click the "flag" button, and report it to Trulia as suspected fraud. They will investigate, and if they find it to be fraudulent, they'll remove it from the sit.

Yes. This happened to me twice. Craiglist scammers mostly for me. I pretended to be an interested prospect to rent the home. The man claimed to be in africa, and I needed to wire him the money and he would send me a key. Was ridiculous.

The listings he placed online were all pulled, but a few days later he was back to doing it again to others listings in the area. Its a shame, because some folks fall for it

Alan is correct, these scams are all over the internet. People looking to rent a property need to be very careful and always keep in mind that if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. Future tenants also need to make sure they do their homework and find out if it is legit and NEVER send money via wire or bank check etc...Meet the owner at the property that is "for rent" - if the owner can't meet you because they are out of the country on "missionary" work you can bet it is a scam!
