Thank you Jeff! Just a few tips on getting some background on rental properties:
1. ALWAYS GOOGLE THE PERSON you think you are dealing with to help verify identity.
2. Always go to the COUNTY ASSESSOR website and CHECK the TRUE ownership of the home...their MAILING address is usually on file or can be gotten to verify them - send them a letter.
3. If the person says they are an agent - get their state and license number and verify it via the dept of real estate wherever they are.
4. Always GOOGLE the Home - to check it on multiple sites - Many times the home is actually being offered for SALE and the photos etal have been lifted and recycled to look like a rental.
5. SKYPE the alleged owner and check them on social media sites like facebook /linkedin etc to be sure it is the same person.
6. Never take a property sight unseen! EVEN if you are unable to see it - call a local realtor or professional for assistance to check out the property...internet scammers usually do not have keys!
If something feels off - trust your gut and DO NOT SEND MONEY / OR fill out any personal information.
Tell them you will have your ATTORNEY check the documents.
Cross trace phone numbers for location verification and REPORT THE SITUATION to law enforcement, internet fraud divisions and federal departments.
If it sounds/looks like a screaming good deal - it is most likely a scam...
VERY SIMPLY - DON"T SEND MONEY or PERSONAL INFORMATION long distance to anyone.
Legitimate "people" and businesses are typically VERY VISIBLE on the internet and can be cross referenced and verified over and over again! If there is "no trace" - I would avoid it.
