John, you should check--rather, more appropriately, your tenants should check--with an attorney in NY. Really, I don't think your problem is with the other landlord who was to lease to your current (and-soon-to-be-former) tenant; instead, your problem lies with your tenant. The tenant seems to be making her problem with her new landlord your problem. You have to come to kindly explain to your tenant that your arrangement to have her move out is between you and her, and although you are sympathetic to her plight, that plight of hers is outside the realm of your dealings with her.
