Fairfax City is a great place to buy as it often has slightly lower housing values and lower taxes. Having said that it also probably provides less appreciation value potential than a similar Fairfax County home. I live in Fairfax County and have children in Providence Elementary School. The teachers are good and the school seems to have money from both the City and the County providing a wealth of services and up-to-date technology including smart-boards and additional help for learning challenges as well as advanced placement curriculum. As a parent and a professional if you have children or just hope to sell your home in the future to someone who does, both Fairfax City and County are strong markets due to the school reputation and employment base.... more
The renting part generally is legal. However, you do have to be aware of the other issues, already raised below. The issue of the separate kitchen (whether it's allowed, if it';s up to code, for instance) is important. Also as noted, if your home is governed by an HOA, there may be rules or regulations that would affect your activities. Still, as a practical matter, there are lots of them in the Falls Church area.
If you have more specific questions, feel free to post them.
This is a great question. While you might think there is a ratio between purchase prices and rental prices, location and upgrades can set a much higher price.
If you need assistance setting a price, a good agent can do that. Make sure they work in the area the property is located in. Local knowledge is important.
If you are looking, then you will find that rental properties most always go for what is asked or darned close. That is because being so close to the government, we have a brisk market. Landlords do rather well.
So...if you are a landlord to be - you should do just fine with a little research. If you are looking, just hire a good local agent.
Good luck!... more
The easiest way to search for homes in that area is by zip code, as others have said. The best tool that I have found for seeing where different zip code boundaries are is here ...
This tool uses Google Maps and puts the zip code boundaries over top. It's a great visual tool to help narrow your search criteria for any location in the US, and it doesn't require a huge download. Hope it helps.... more
